Halfway through the Tire Rack “One Lap of America” competition, drivers remain impressed with the performance of Dunlop’s newest track tire, the Direzza ZII.
A modern take on the iconic “Cannonball Run” of the 1970’s, the One Lap of America competition is an 8-day expedition with timed competitions taking place at race tracks across the country. No support crews are permitted for the more than 3,000 mile journey, and only one set of street tires can be used during the entire competition.
For 2013, seven teams have chosen to compete on Dunlop’s new Direzza ZII tire, including Tim Harper and his 1992 Mitsubishi Galant VR4.
“So far we love the tires,” said Harper. “The street manners are impeccable and they’re very responsive and predictable on the track.”
An evolution of Dunlop’s popular Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec, the Direzza ZII optimizes dry track performance and handling without sacrificing the wet handling or wear characteristics of the Star Spec. This was accomplished, in part, by creating a more solid tread pattern which gives the tire a larger contact patch and more rigidity in the shoulder area.
Having competed in previous One Lap competitions on the Direzza Z1 Sport Star Spec, Harper is quick to recognize the improvements of the Direzza ZII.
“On the track we can tell they are an evolution from the Z1 Star Spec in every way,” Harper said. “The turn-in is better and breakaway is nice, smooth and predicable, making them a great track tire.”
With three days of driving left in the competition, Harper and his teammate, Stephen Burke, are running second in the Mid-Priced Sedan class.
Drivers Neil Simon and Woody Hair’s 2011 BMW 1M, also running on Direzza ZII tires, is currently leading the SSGT2 Small Bore class.
