Boston, Mass., June 4, 2013— With warm weather and sunshine throughout much of the U.S., the summer months of June, July, and August make up the busiest months for moving. Many of this season's moving consumers will decide to hire moving companies to help make their transition easier, and according to a quick poll on, 58% of people said that the environmental practices of a moving company factored into their decision to select a certain provider.

Luckily, many businesses are becoming increasingly aware of their carbon footprint and have made the shift towards more eco-friendly services, products, and other efforts., the resource for stress-free moving, reached out to more than 25 moving companies—some that operate nationally, some that just serve their local communities—to see whose green practices stood out.

Check out some of the companies that My Move identified as leading the way in eco-friendly moving:

NorthStar Moving Company

NorthStar Moving prides itself on its green efforts not only in its moving services, but also through its community outreach. The Californian company has partnered with several organizations in efforts to reduce waste. Together with Habitat for Humanity ReStore, NorthStar Moving collects customers’ used furniture and donates it to those who need it.

NorthStar Moving’s trucks run on biodiesel, which reduces harmful emissions. The company also conserves fuel and prevents idling by using battery-powered lift gates. NorthStar Moving packs with biodegradable bubble wrap, and the business touts a green storage facility with efficient lighting and space usage. They also give people the chance to buy already-used boxes for 25% off. After the move, customers can then sell back their boxes to NorthStar Moving for 25% of the buying price, for a total of 50% savings—and a lot less waste.

Wm. Duggan Co., Inc.

Wm. Duggan, an agent of Atlas Van Lines, follows many green practices, but the company’s claim to eco-friendly fame is its hybrid moving truck, the first of its kind in the business. When driving 30 miles per hour or less, the truck operates on 90 percent battery power. This comes in handy during moves between Boston and New York, where the traffic is frequently stop-and-go.

The company recently converted one of its steel buildings into an insulated masonry block building, reducing gas usage for heating by 75%. They use packing supplies made of recycled materials, and its storage facility runs on solar power.

Green Truck Moving Company

Green Truck operates only in the Nashville area, but their efforts stack up with the larger companies. All of their trucks run on biodiesel, and they eschew the need for lift gates by using ramps for about nine out of 10 moves.

In partnership with the Tennessee Environmental Council, the company’s carbon offset program plants two trees in the community for every move. Green Truck is also the preferred mover for Village Real Estate Services, and together the companies work to promote green homebuilding and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. The company also rents out reusable plastic “eco-containers” to replace cardboard boxes and offers to recycle anything the customer uses during the move.

JK Moving Services

On its website, JK Moving Services says that sustainability is “what matters most,” and the business reflect this philosophy with environmental efforts in its operations, education and community service. The company, based in the Washington, D.C. area, reuses trucks’ engine oil to heat its facilities.

JK also recycles paper and cardboard and makes use of its onsite compactor and auger to reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills. Its cardboard boxes are made of 30% recycled material, and for commercial moves they offer a “boxless move,” a zero waste program that replaces cardboard boxes with reusable plastic containers.
