Kentucky Derby Parties Mark Fourth Annual Tavern Event for High Style Fun and Southern Charm on Saturday, May 3

PRAIRIE VILLAGE, KAN. (March 27, 2014) – Both Tavern in the Village, located in The Village Shops in Prairie Village, and Tavern at Mission Farms, located in Leawood’s Mission Farms, will bring classic Southern charm to Kansas City for its Kentucky Derby Day Parties, Saturday May 3, 2014 from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m.

 2014 marks fourth annual Tavern Kentucky Derby Day Party. Traditional Kentucky Derby dishes and locally owned Dark Horse Distillery cocktails will join each restaurant’s existing menu with its handcrafted Thai Tavern Julep and an extended happy hour. Honoring Southern traditions and adding to the fun, guests will draw names of horses every 30 minutes for chances to win prizes at the conclusion of the Derby Day Party. Fun giveaways for the biggest and most fashionable hat and other prizes will be given away throughout the event as well.

  • Dual Derby Day Parties Celebrating the Kentucky Derby Races - The public is invited to the parties hosted at both locations from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. and are encouraged to dress to impress in the finest spring fashion.

 Attire:              

  • Hats. Bowties. Bold colors. Frilly frocks. Dashing suits, suspenders or preppy. Embrace the Southern tradition.

Kentucky Derby Specials: 

Special Derby Day Drinks: The Thai Tavern Julep is the featured Derby Day Party drink, along with other custom handcrafted cocktails and Kentucky Derby favorites. Locally owned Dark Horse Distillery is partnering with the Taverns to bring its local DHD Reserve Bourbon, DHD Reunion Rye Whiskey and Rider Vodka in addition to the premium liquors served at both Taverns

Traditional Dishes: The Taverns will serve traditional Derby dishes including the Kentucky Hot Brown Turkey Sandwich, Shrimp and Grits, and Kentucky Derby Burgoo Stew, available throughout the event. Similar to mulligan stew, burgoo is Kentucky’s most famous stew.

Outside and Inside: In addition to the bars, the patios are open to guests for mingling and enjoying the event. All TVs in both bars will feature the Kentucky Derby and events for guests to cheer on the horses and chances to win prizes throughout the event.

Kentucky Derby Contender Contest: Each guest attending will randomly draw a name tag that coincides with a contending Kentucky Derby horse name. Each half-hour guests will draw additional horse name tags for more chances to win prizes. Randomly throughout the event, guests will receive prizes for the fashions and Kentucky Derby-inspired fun. Prizes include a tasting party for ten at Dark Horse Distillery, gift certificates and merchandise from local businesses and boutiques, and gift cards from Tavern in the Village and Tavern at Mission Farms. Winners of the Contender Contest will be chosen immediately once the winning horse is officially announced. Guests must be present to win.

Extended Happy Hour: An extended happy hour will feature drink specials that include $2.50 bottles of beer, $5 select glasses of wine, $5 martinis and $5 manhattans; happy hour food specials include $5 BBQ Pulled Pork Sliders, Calamari, Fajita Steak Sliders, Hummus with Pita, and Italian Meatball Sliders
